David Mark Winfield was born in St. Paul, Minnesota on October 3, 1951 - the same day Bobby Thomson hit his pennant-winning home run for the New York Giants known as "the shot heard 'round the world." When the Twins came to Minnesota in 1961, Dave and his older brother Steve began playing baseball in earnest. They honed their athletic skills down at St. Paul's Oxford playground where coach and mentor Bill Peterson took them under his wing (and remains a good friend today). It wasn't until his senior year in high school that Winfield grew into the formidable 6'6" tower of power he would become. |

From the U of M, Winfield went straight to the major leagues, playing for the San Diego Padres. He never played a single game in the minor leagues, and is one of only two athletes in history to be drafted in three professional sports: baseball, basketball and football (although he never played football at the U). Winfield was inducted into the College Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006, its inaugural year. | ||||||||||
